Tenorio Volcano National Park in Costa Rica

Posted on 26 November 2010 by Paul Clayton

I visited the Tenorio Volcano National Park during a family holiday in Costa Rica. Tenorio lies northwest of the famous Lake Arenal and even though the road up to the park might be challenging, and definitely requires a 4WD vehicle, the destination is worth the jungle ride.

Tenorio is located in the northern part of Costa Rica near the Arenal Volcano and therefor is also part of the same conservation area known as the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area which includes some other territories as well.

The Tenorio Volcano National Park had some excellent hiking paths which can be done by all types of hikers and even I was able to get to the higher points and I do not consider myself that much of an athletic..

The turqoise lagoons, coloured by by means of a volcanic chemical reaction, and the waterfalls add to the almost fairytale-like atmosphere. It’s no wonder they called the river running through the Tenorio Volcano National Park the Celeste River, or Rio Celeste in Spanish.

The contrast of the clear blue water and the lush green rainforest against the volcanic peaks of Tenorio makes this park the perfect place to photograph some of the nicest panoramic views in Costa Rica.  resources

Vacationing in Costa Rica at Poas Volcano

Posted on 18 November 2010 by peterbuilt

Costa Rica has much to offer tourists, especially those who are interested in nature and adventure activities. Costa Rica is situated in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama and is easily accessible because of its close proximity to the USA and Canada. Often it is just a short flight away.

One of the major attractions in Costa Rica is Poás Volcano. Situated just an hour from downtown San José, it is easily accessible on good roads.

Poás Volcano is an active stratovolcano. Poás has erupted 39 times since 1828. There are two crater lakes near its summit.

The northern lake is known as the Laguna Caliente. It is one of the world’s most acidic lakes, with a pH of almost 0, and as a consequence supports little or no aquatic life. Lake Botos, the southern lake, fills an inactive crater, which last erupted 7500BP. It is cold and clear, and is surrounded by a cloud forest located within the Poás Volcano National Park.

Poás is well known for often being clouded over and as a result the craters may often be invisible. Because of this it is best to visit the volcano early in the day, that way you have the best chance of seeing the main crater.

Poás Volcano National Park opens at 8am daily and if you stay in the area, it is easy to be there as the park opens.

There are many accommodation choices in the area. The lodge closest to Poás, Lagunias Lodge is not accessible unless you have a powerful 4 wheel drive vehicle. Lo Que Tu Quieras Lodge is only 4.5 kilometres from the entrance, but is in serious need of an upgrade and tends..read more

Take this Costa Rica train trip and enjoy some of the most beautiful

Posted on 12 November 2010 by puravida

I had read about it and so I decided to make sure I take this Costa Rica train trip and enjoy some of the most beautiful views of the lush green region. When you come to the jungle train here in Costa Rica, you will notice that all is quite traverse, everything but the famous route which is quite impenetrable. This route leaves from San Jose and goes all the way to the Atlantic. In fact when you go to the Trollope who happens to be a famous postal inspector here, he said that the rail line actually only was built to ship the coffee crop to the sea which was competed quite later on when the route was directly established.

This track somehow seems to offer a beautiful introduction to a mountain which is completely jungle clad. This makes up for the beautiful landscape of Costa Rica. There are about one hundred miles of embankments which have taken about twenty years to complete. There were a lot of workers who died because of Malaria, dysentery and heat exhaustion. There were a lot more people who were here than at the cutting of the Panama canal.  The workers who were brought in fro Jamaica were the only ones that survived the gruesome work that was needed to be done here.  When the track opened it was shortened the entire… read more

Volcanoe’s of Costa Rica

Posted on 25 October 2010 by CarlosO

In Costa Rica there are many volcanic formations. They belong to so called Pacific Rim of Fire. Seven are considered to be active. Their activity is connected with fertile soils, which cover the majority of Costa Rica territory. The highest Costa Rica`s volcano is Irazu, the most active is Arenal and Poas has the second widest crater in the world. (diameter 1.5 kilometers).

Many of them are within the national parks. Costa Rica major volcanic peaks are stratovolcanos. The type of magma that fuels most Costa Rica volcanos is thick, viscous, and so filled with gases that the erupting magma often blasts violently into the air.

The most serious eruption was that of Irazu volcanoe in 1963. It errupted clouds of smoke and ash that kept San Jose in a blanket of ash for two years… read more about Costa Rica volcanoe’s

Puerto Vieja De Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Posted on 15 September 2010 by CarlosO

Puerto Vieja de Sarapiqui is the capital city of the largest county in the Costa Rican province of Heredia, situated just thirty kilometers south of the border with Nicaragua and between the convergence of the Sarapiqui River and Puerto Vieja River. Puerto Vierja de Sarapiqui is an increasingly popular tourist destination, particularly with adventure seekers attracted by its ever more famous white water rafting trips down the Sarapiqui River.

Other than thrill seekers, more eco-friendly tourists are also attracted to the area because of its large number of nearby nature and wildlife reserves. Once a quiet little town, Puerto Vieja de Sarapiqui is rapidly emerging as one of Costa Rica’s most important tourist areas, and offers innumerable activities for visitors including bird watching, hiking, kayaking and of course the aforementioned white water rafting.

The area also has several beautiful butterfly gardens and banana plantations. Accommodation is not a problem, with an array of Costa Rica hotels, lodges and luxury villas in the neighborhood, and plenty of bars and restaurants as well. Puerto Vieja de Sarapiqui is located on the northern plains and is surrounded on all sides by both verdant forests and numerous agricultural plantations. The town is accessible by various routes, from San Jose via Santa Clara and then heading north to Tigre, or by the wonderfully scenic route offered along the road to San Miguel from Brava alongside the Poas Volcano and then onwards.

Cano Negro National Park is the home to more than twenty five thousand acres of lowland rain forest, swamplands and wetlands. An important habitat for crocodiles, freshwater fish (particularly tarpon) and waterfowl (including ducks, egrets, grackles, grebes, storks and cormorant), the park features an impressive, sprawling lake (Lago Cano Negro) and numerous fauna such as big cats (such as jaguars and ocelots), deers, monkeys, sloths and tapirs.
Catarata Fortuna is a tour operating out of La Fortuna which takes tourist on a truly spectacular horseback journey to an even more spectacular waterfall.

The Magil Reserve (now integrated with the Tenorio Volcano National Park of Guanacaste) protects over a thousand acres with a specialised wildlife habitat of montane rain forest and cloud forestes. It is one of the few habitats of the rare black panther, and the only place in the world to catch sight of the endangered and famous white eagle.
Selva Verde is a private reserve covering more than five hundred acres of lowland rain forest, featuring numerous wildlife, well-maintained trails and a spectacular butterfly park with over fifty species of butterflies.

La Selva Biological Station is a research station and wildlife park featuring more than four hundred species of birds, two thirds of Costa Rica’s mammal species and over half of the country’s varieties of butterflies.

The Venado Caverns are a treat for dedicated spelunkers. Formed out of solid limestone, the caves extend for over one and a half miles into mountain foothills, featuring stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams, all interconnected. There are even some strange wildlife treats in store for tourists, including blind fish, bats and a very odd species of transparent frog!

The Northern Lowlands and Arenal Volcano are a must see destination for any tourists interested in visiting Costa Rica.

Town of La Cruz Costa Rica

Posted on 06 September 2010 by CarlosO

La Cruz is located a hundred and seventy-two miles northwest of the capital of San Jose. It is a small hilltop town near the Nicaraguan border. There is little to do in the town aside from enjoy the beautiful views of Bahia Salinas. However, it is a gateway to the beaches below the mountain that are almost always deserted. There are a few mountain lodges that are nearby in Santa Rosa and on the border of the Guanacaste National Park.

There is not a whole lot to do in La Cruz other than enjoy the sunset and wonderful food at the El Mirador Ehecatl. This is small restaurant that has a great views of Bahia Salinas and has high standards for their food at only slightly high prices.

If you plan on staying in La Cruz instead of at a nearby town or lodge then you should look into Amalia’s Inn or the Hotel Bella Vista. Both of these are simple little hotels with small pools and good views of the bay.

The annual Windwing Kite Event “Windy Passions”. For those yearning for a combination of ocean and lake kiting, this exciting two week program takes advantage of the strong seasonal winds of Bahia Salinas and Lake Arenal during the February-March. Based at the ecologically sensitive resort which features 6 private, secluded villas each varying in size with between 1 and 5 bedrooms or suites for a total of 25 bedrooms with bathrooms; all villas have balconies and a private infinity or plunge pool. See villas above to reserve.

The closest airport to La Cruz that has regular flights is in Liberia. If you are going to travel by car then you take the Inter-American Highway west from San Jose and just follow the signs for the Nicaraguan border or the Guanacaste beaches. Once you reach Liberia then you head straight through the only major intersection and follow the signs to the Penas Blancas and the Nicaraguan border. It takes about five hours by car to get from San Jose to La Cruz.

In San Jose you can catch a bus that leaves for Penas Blances at five, seven, seven-forty-five and ten-thirty in the morning or one-thirty and four in the evening. All of these buses make stops in La Cruz and will also let you off in the town of Santa Rosa. The bus ride typically takes six hours and costs about five dollars.

Three favorite beaches of Guanacaste- Coco, Hermosa and Ocotal

Posted on 27 August 2010 by peterbuilt

Playa del Coco is fishing village turned into a beach resort, located about 20 minutes from Liberia International Airport. With its crystal blue waters and grayish sand, the waters of Playas del Coco is very inviting especially after spending hours under the heat of the sun. Playas del Coco is the hub of the area, there are four beaches you can play on – from south to north Playa Ocotal, Playa del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama. All with in 12 miles.

Playa del Coco is one of the newest beaches to be developed in Guanacaste and is a popular destination for people who are looking for laid back days and minimal nightlife. People who liked the laid back atmosphere would find this place suitable to their taste.

Known among tourists primarily as Costa Rica’s number one jump-off for diving excursions. Playas del Coco has booming development. Once completed condo and housing projects currently under construction could dwarf this charming oasis. You can find most any type of vacation rental in this area, ultra luxury 7 bedroom villa or your one bedroom with kitchenette condo. Coco and the area have it all.

Finding an inexpensive place to stay in Playa del Coco is not difficult. There are many hotels and inns with affordable prices all over the place. In fact, Playa del Coco is really one of the places in Costa Rica where you can find many things within your tight budget. Food and beer for one thing are reasonably priced so you don’t have to worry of draining your resources over those. You can party all night and still have cash to spare.

The location of the area is attractive to all vacationers do to the International Airport, one of only two in the country and you can fish world class waters, visit volcanoe’s and hot springs and play golf in just a few minutes from the area.

To the north and Just around the corner is Playa Hermosa

Interesting to note that there are two towns/beaches named Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica. Both are lush and beautiful and have lived up to its name Hermosa which means beautiful in Spanish. How else can you describe a place of cool blue ocean and majestic palm trees?

One is located in Guanacaste which offers an idyllic and relaxed atmosphere for families on vacation and the other lies in the province of Puntarenas where the waves and the surfing action thrive. Either Hermosa is great place to visit or stay when vacationing in Costa Rica.

So, if you are bringing you family for a vacation, take Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste and breath easy. The beach there is safe for kids. This Playa Hermosa is rarely crowded making it a great retreat for those who would like to runaway from busy schedules and heavy traffic. The weather is also ideal with warm temperature throughout the year.

On the other hand, the Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas is known as one of the best surfing havens for professionals all over the world. There are international and local competitions held throughout the year in the area. Located some five kilometers south of the town of Jaco, this place is the haven of those who are adventurous. A word of warning, the beaches of Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas are not as safe for swimming as the beach in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste as the waves and the undertows are much stronger. Waves could reach as high as 13 feet in this area which makes it ideal for professional surfers. Amateurs and beginners, its good advice to take your surf boards somewhere else in the area because the waves here are monstrous! You don’t want to ruin your vacation by getting yourself mauled by huge waves when trying turn learn to surf!

Costa Rica – The Green Jewel of the Americas

Posted on 23 August 2010 by Paul Clayton

How does a small Central American country with limited economic resources outrank many developed countries in terms of achieving prosperity without damaging its fragile environment?

GLOBE-Net, August 11, 2010 – Costa Rica, a small country nestled on the Central American isthmus facing two vast oceans has embarked on a truly green path for its economic and social development. While many countries have sought to gain wealth based on the unchecked exploitation of their natural resources, Costa Rica has opted to use its natural environmental wealth to pursue an ecologically sustainable path to economic growth.

And it’s doing a great job.

Yale and Columbia Universities recently published the 2010 Environmental Performance Index, which ranks 163 countries on 25 performance indicators and ten policy categories in environmental public health and ecosystem vitality. Costa Rica ranked third out of 163 countries, up from fifth place in 2008. Only Switzerland and Iceland outranked it in second and first place. Canada and the United States ranked 46  and 61 respectively.

So what is Costa Rica doing right?  Here are some examples of what the country is doing to achieve sustainable growth and to protect its environment:

Ecotourism: In order to promote sustainable tourism, one of the country’s top revenue generators, Costa Rica has endorsed a program that grants companies Certification for Sustainable Tourism provided they meet certain performance standards. This differentiates sustainable businesses from others in the tourism sector that still have not adopted responsible environmental management practices.

In addition, Costa Rica has signed international agreements with the United Nations to promote green tourism around the world. The Global Sustainable Tourism Partnership allows Costa Rica (and any other country that is part of this program) to share ideas or projects on sustainable tourism. It also enables the reduction of negative social or environmental impacts, which in turn allows a country to more fully integrate tourism into its green economy.

Corporate Responsibility: To demonstrate the government’s commitment to social responsibility, Costa Rica is the first country in the region to implement a legal framework in Corporate Social Responsibility for Tourism. This framework imposes sanctions for businesses that promote such activities as sexual commerce. As well, the Costa Rican government is urging businesses to commit to being socially responsible by respecting the rights of employees, their families, and their communities. This helps in the delivery of social aid programs…. read more
