Costa Rica Volunteering

Posted on 18 October 2010 by Paul Clayton

If volunteering to work with children is your thing, there are no shortage of opportunities to do so in Costa Rica, with places for help needed in orphanages, schools, a children’s hospital and nutrition centers. Many schools in Costa Rica lack the resources to offer their young students any kind of organized sporting activities projects, so volunteer coaches or athletic motivators are very much in demand (particularly soccer coaches, a sport which has grown to be very popular in Costa Rica in recent times), with both sexes encouraged to come forward and apply. Other community improvement programs include landscaping public spaces and renovating buildings.

Some other volunteering in Costa Rica programs include artisan production, working with the blind or deaf community, in Costa Rica National Parks, or nursing homes.

Young people are not excluded from volunteering in Costa Rica, with numerous activities and opportunities aimed at the younger age group, including educational summer projects where teenage students can attend camps. For older students considering taking a year off, or simply looking for an enjoyable and educational way to spend their summer break, there are international volunteer opportunities available in areas as diverse as teaching, sports, care or even journalism! Students and/or professionals in the field of health care have no shortage of opportunities if they are looking for volunteering activities in Costa Rica as well. They can work as a paramedical assistant in either San Jose or Heredia, gaining first hand experience by working with Costa Rican paramedical experts, respond to emergency calls and receive paramedical and CPR training. There are medical internships available in local clinics and hospitals, or even for those with no medical experience or indeed interest, there are opportunities to provide comfort and support to patients at local children’s hospitals.

Many of these volunteering projects include… read more Costa Rica volunteering

Costa Rican Man Trains 18-Foot Croc to Perform for Tourists

Posted on 01 October 2010 by puravida

So, say you found an ailing, 150-pound baby crocodile who had been wounded by a farmer’s gunshot. What would you do?

Nurse it back to full health? Feed it up and gain its trust, so the two of you can perform together for tourists? While those might not be the options that would occur to most people, it’s the path of action that one man in Costa Rica took.

A fisherman named Chito found an ill croc 20 years ago, christened him “Pocho,” and helped him get back on his scaly feet. After spending a decade with the croc, Chito decided to train Pocho to do some tricks.

Now best of friends, they perform daily shows for tourists: Chito gets in the water with Pocho and performs a variety of feats, including spinning the 18-foot croc and lifting his snout out of the water.

But don’t take our word for it — check out the video of Chito and Pocho below.  resource

Costa Rica’s Quetzal

Posted on 17 May 2010 by CarlosO

The quetzal may be small and pigeon like but it makes up for its stature with audacious plumage: vivid, shimmering green comes alive in the abundant sunlight of Central America flashing emerald to gold back to spectacular green.

While everyone spoke of its beauty, the bird was so elusive that early European naturalists believed the Costa Rica’s Quetzal was just a myth of the Central American natives. Which makes sense since early Mayans and Aztecs worshiped a god called Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, and depicted him with a headdress of quetzal feathers. In fact, the bird’s name is derived from quetzalli, an Aztec word meaning “precious” or “beautiful.”

One English naturalist, Osbert Salvin, wrote he was “determined, rain or no rain, to be off to the mountain forests in search of quetzals,to see and shoot which has been a daydream for me ever since I set foot in Central America.” Salvin, the first European ever to record an observation of the bird, noted it was “unequaled for splendour among the birds of the New World,” then he promptly shot it. During the next few decades, thousands of quetzal plumes crossed the Atlantic to adorn fashionable hats of the elite in Paris, Amsterdam, and London.

The Mayans considered killing the bird to be a capital crime, but they too revered its feathers. They were worth more than gold in the Mayan society. Guatemalans were so taken by the bird they named their currency after it. The bird also graces the national shield, flag, postage stamps, along with their money.

Although the Costa Ricans don’t worship the bird with quite as much fervor, the bird is more easily seen in Costa Rica. Especially during breeding season (March-June) when the narcissistic males show off their beautiful tail plumes and scarlet red breast in spiraling skyward flights and dizzing dives causing their tail feathers to ripple behind in part of the courtship ritual. If you can’t make it out for their mating season, try to time your visit during the bird’s meticulous feeding hours, which you can almost set your watch by. They eat insects, small frogs, lizards, and the fruit of the broad-leafed aguacatillo.
